Don’t give up now

on April 19, 2013

Today there is a little sunshine. Today it seems possible to go on.

Funny how some days just flatten you. Like an invisible yeti hurtling ten-ton fur and snow out of left field and bowling you completely over.

And when the tears stop – not because they’ve run out but because you’ve run out of energy or patience or both – when the tears and the sobs stop, then there’s that heavy weariness, and the bliss of a good night’s sleep.

There was a stage when the best part of my day was asleep. I fell into bed glad, glad, glad. I was safe.

Now I really want to want to wake up. I want to look forward to the day. I want to have a life I love to wake up to.

I reckon everyone struggling through this caring marathon – or their own ill-health or whatever cause marathon – where you’re not running any longer, not even walking, but dragging yourself along on badly scraped hands and knees – we know how this feels. Treadmill. Tunnel with no glimmer of light. Same old, same old…

But there is sleep. And here in East Anglia, every bank and ditch is blessed with primroses. The trees are getting fuzzy with the first burgeoning of new growth.

That’s what God promises us in Jesus: new life and hope. Spring shows us how it works. How first there has to be winter.

So for those of us who feel winter has gone on too long, don’t give up now. There is new life and new hope. Because there is Jesus.

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 3:8
