Roll on spring!

‘Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.’ (Hebrews 11:1) But it’s great when there are clues left for us to pick up on and encourage us!

This morning, there was evidence that the weather forecast wasn’t entirely wrong: a few frosty hailstones left in the grass.

But there is fresh green pushing through in defiance of this continuing wintry weather, declaring we are in February and spring is on the way. Here are the chives (scallions) returning:

And dill’s sharp green feathery leaves pushing up from amongst the grungy bamboo-like stalks of last year:

There are even flowers! Valiant little violets — rightly named heart’s-ease — blossoming sweetly in a sprawl against the path:

And the first primula flower:

The promise of lots of daffodils. And that’s just one rather neglected pot!

We all experience winter — as a season of the soul as well as a season of the year — and in both cases the fallow season, the dark season, has a good purpose (Romans 8:28). The fresh new growth in my garden reminds me my hope is not empty. We’re on a journey with a destination. God has plans for us – plans to give us hope and a future (Jeremiah 29: 11).

Roll on spring – in our gardens and in our hearts and lives!
